Hello internet! Today’s blog comes in several parts:
Part One. In fourth grade, on of my friends moved states. We were never particularly close, so after his departure, we ceased all forms of communication. About two years later, he called me (how he still had my number, I’ll never know) to let me know that he was coming back to Sydney from a week’s holiday, and did I want to catch up with him? I could hardly refuse without seeming like a horrible person, so I consented to spending a day with him, which was fun, but not something I was terribly interested in doing again. The next year, he did it again. And the next. Then there was a bit of a gap, and by half way through 2010, I had all but forgotten about his sporadic, awkward visits.
Until yesterday, when I received a phone call from him that lasted all of thirty seconds, and informed me that he had just pulled up outside my house. Trapped, with him in person at my front door, I had little choice but to consent to spending the following day with him. That was today.
Now, don’t get me wrong. I don’t dislike the guy, but after periods of more than twelve months during which we haven’t communicated, not even via the internet, spending an entire day with him after very short notice was undeniably awkward. We saw Gulliver’s Travels at the cinema (very funny) and spent several hours killing time in the Apple Store, where I introduced him to the concept of an ‘Apple Store Vlog’. One that will never make it to YouTube.
This leads me to part two of this blog, which focuses on a rather exciting event that took place in the Apple Store. I was being stupid with the eight display iPads, leaving nerdfighter messages in the notes sections for people to eventually discover. At about the sixth iPad, I decided to utilize the Apple Store internet and go on YouTube. I clicked on (fingered?) the YouTube app. And it opened to a video from the previous person. A Project for Awesome video. Featuring John Green.
Ladies, gentlemen and spambots of the internet. There is another Nerdfighter in my home town. I was so excited by this revelation that I yelled out, to the thirty-or-so people in the Apple Store ‘OMG – JOHN GREEN!’, and proceeded to do my Nerdfighter Happy Dance. If you’re not a Nerdfighter, crawl out of your cave, get on YouTube and look up all the references I’ve made. I think I even linked John and Hank’s YouTube channel in another blog, so don’t be lazy!
Part three involves that last post I put up concerning whether or not I should ditch my pseudonym in favour of my real name. I read all of your opinions, and after a lengthy Skype chat with a friend, made the decision that I will, some time in the near future, reveal my real name to you. Probably early in the New Year. I had fun making this particular Skype friend guess my name, and they managed in THREE GUESSES (Am I really that obvious?), so if you read this in time, this is your chance to guess (although obviously not if you already know it!). Leave a guess in the comments!
Part four concerns my New Years Resolutions, which I will be blogging about in an effort to have a lasting reminder of my goals, as well as witnesses to them. This post will go up either on New Year’s Eve, or New Year’s Day, so again, stay tuned for more blogging.
Part five is the final part, and is a plea for help from me to you. It’s no secret that my blogs are often obscenely long (although this one is a little shorter). I don’t know if this is ever going to change, but I want your opinion: what is the perfect word count for a blog?
Enjoy the last moments of 2010. Make it special.
